For breakfast, 5 mornings a week, Goose has granola and groady yogourt.  I pack it in his lunch, and he gnashes at work.  I say the yogourt is groady because it has nothing in it.  No sugar, no flavour, no nothing.  It is groady.

But a small crisis occurred in our house this week.  We ran out of granola.  Egads, what was the man supposed to eat tomorrow morning?  This discovery, of course,  was made long after I had showered and had changed into my formal evening wear.  Picture chocolate brown John Deere loungers.  There, now you have the full picture.  Clearly, a run to the grocery store was out of the question.  So, I made some granola.  It was surprisingly easy and I can’t promise you I won’t be doing it again.

For once, here is a recipe:

4 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cup raisins

Start with some oatmeal.  I did not have any old-fashioned rolled oats, so I substituted the quick cooking kind.  It worked, but the old-fashioned would definitely work better.  Quick-cooking has a lot of finer particles that fall to the bottom and don’t stay with the group.

Sugar, cinnamon, salt, and chopped pecans in.

This is the measuring cup that held the oil and maple syrup and was put in the microwave to heat everything up and then had vanilla added.  Please use your imagination.

Spread it all out on a lined cookie sheet and pop it into a 300 F oven.  It will need to bake for something like 45 minutes to an hour.  Your nose will tell you when it’s done.  Stir it around 2-3 times during baking.


Once the granola has thoroughly cooled, pour it into some kind of resealable vessel.  Then toss in your raisins and give it a shake.  And that’s it – you have granola in less time than it would take you to go to the store and buy some.

This recipe just begs to be played with.  Change up the nuts – walnuts, maybe chopped peanuts.  Use honey instead of maple syrup.  And the dried fruit options are practically endless.  Even the cinnamon could be switched out for ground cardamom, nutmeg, or any one of the jars I know you have sitting in your cupboard.

Give it a try.  I promise you that you will never again buy granola.
